What Is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)?

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a connective tissue disorder that affects how the body supports and stabilizes itself. Connective tissue plays a vital role in keeping joints strong, muscles supported, and skin resilient. When that tissue is weakened, it can lead to a wide range of symptoms that impact everyday life.

EDS occurs when the body produces collagen that is weaker than normal. Collagen is one of the primary building blocks of connective tissue, so when it doesn’t function properly, joints, muscles, skin, and even blood vessels can be affected.

There are 13 recognized types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, with the most common being:

  • Hypermobile EDS
  • Classical EDS
  • Classical-like EDS
  • Cardio-valvular EDS
  • Vascular EDS

Each type presents differently, which is why proper diagnosis and individualized care are so important.

Common EDS Symptoms

Connective tissue is largely made up of collagen and elastin—two proteins responsible for strength and flexibility. In people with EDS, weakened collagen leads to reduced joint stability and tissue support.

Common symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome may include:

  • Joint hypermobility or instability
  • Frequent joint sprains or dislocations
  • Chronic joint or muscle pain
  • Easy bruising or slow healing
  • Soft, stretchy, or fragile skin
  • Increased scarring

Depending on the specific type of EDS, some individuals may also experience more serious complications such as blood vessel fragility, heart valve issues, thin corneas, bowed limbs, or an increased risk of internal bleeding or stroke. Because symptoms can vary widely, many people with EDS benefit from a care plan tailored specifically to their condition and lifestyle.

Physical Therapy Treatment for EDS

While there is currently no cure for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, physical therapy plays a critical role in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

A structured physical therapy program can help:

  • Improve joint stability
  • Strengthen surrounding muscles
  • Reduce pain and fatigue.
  • Decrease the risk of injury or dislocations
  • Support safer movement in daily activities

At Rehab Guru, our physical therapy experts work closely with individuals diagnosed with EDS to develop personalized treatment plans designed to protect joints, build strength, and support long-term function.
